Problem when animating canvas controls

Anyone know what could stop (other than a bug) canvas controls such as buttons or images not working with animations. I was testing copies of old projects and added animator with animation to a panel and animated its color and child controls isActive properties. All worked fine but at some point it stopped animating runtime pretty much everything else than rect transform properties. If I scrub the timeline in the editor the color and active properties are animated.
